- Expose yourself to warm, moist air. Before you start to use your sense of smell, go into a sauna or hot shower. Hot, moist air clears out any odors that may be lingering in your nasal membranes.
- Close your eyes and ears when you smell things. You want to block out your other senses when you attempt to heighten your sense of smell. Avoid touching or tasting anything as well while you smell different objects.
- Write down everything you smell for a day. Focus on each aroma found in your daily environment. Record the different scents you find.
- Pick a scent to focus on each day. For example, pick a day to spend on floral scents. Go to a garden and smell each new flower. Mentally compare each scent as you move through the garden.
- Link a smell to a memory. To heighten your sense of smell, you can use a memory to connect to a different smell. As an example, each time you smell the ocean, think about your family's time at a seaside resort.
