Ways to Improve Your Basketball Shooting

Shooting the basketball well is a goal every coach has for his team. Some teams are loaded with shooters who can hit open jumpers, while other teams struggle to hit any shot outside of a layup. Teaching proper form and having your team improve its shooting can make your team far more effective on the court. In addition to the obvious benefit of hitting longer shots, improved shooting will force the other team to play tighter defense, making it easier for the ball handler to cut in and make a layup.

Increase Range
Have two players start out at the 15-foot mark. The first player takes his shot and the second players gets the rebound. The second player fires the ball back to the shooter who takes another shot. The shooter follows his shot, collects the rebound and passes to the second player. The second player shoots and then grabs his rebound. The drill continues in this manner until the players have combined to make five shots in a row. At that point, they move out to the 3-point line and keep going until they make five shots in a row. Then have them move out to the NBA 3-point line and attempt the drill from there. Give the two players a 3-minute time limit from each spot.

3-Point Sidestep
Start off at the top of the key past the 3-point line. Take the 3-pointer from that spot, take a step to the right and take another 3-pointer. Keep going in this manner until you reach the baseline. You should be able to take 12 shots. Each player on the team does this drill, and the player who makes the most 3-pointers wins the drill.

Elbow to Elbow
This drill will help you learn to shoot on the run. Start off at the right elbow of the free-throw line. Your teammate is stationed under the basket. She fires you a pass and you shoot quickly. After you let go of the ball, run to center court and then back to the left elbow. Your teammate fires you the ball and you shoot from that spot. Keep going in this manner until you take five shots from each spot. Switch positions with your teammate and let her shoot from the elbows.
