Basketball Court Rules

The size of the basketball court may vary depending on level of play. Ideal basketball courts for high school and collegiate level of play should be a rectangle that is 84 feet long by 50 feet wide. No court should be any longer than 94 feet long and no wider than 50 feet. The width of all lines on the basketball court should be 2 inches.

Three-Point Line
The high school and collegiate three point line is 19.9 feet from the center of the rim to the outer edge of the three-point line. The center of the rim is located and then measured from the floor out towards the three point line. Men's college basketball has recently extended the distance of the three point line from 19.9 feet to 20.9 feet as of January 2010.

Free-Throw Line
The free-throw line should be parallel to the out of bounds end line and perpendicular to the side out of bounds lines. The measurement for the free throw line is 15 feet from the front of the backboard. The half circle that surrounds the free throw line has a radius of 6 feet to the outside of the line. Each individual space along the free-throw lane measures 3 feet apart. These spaces are used for players when a player is attempting a series of free-throw shots.

Center Court Line
The dividing line should split the court into two equal halves. A center court circle shall be placed in the direct center of the court. The radius of the center court circle should be 6 feet to the outer edge of the circular line. If the court is less than 74 feet long, then it should be divided by two lines. These two lines should be parallel and each 40 feet from the farther end line.
