Iron is an important element for our bodies, one that we need the right amount of: not too much, not too little. Too much iron in your body can effect your metabolism and harm your heart, liver, or other organs. Too little iron in your body can cause anemia, leading to fatigue and weakness, and can also lead to organ failure. Iron is especially necessary for pregnant women. Here are a few great foods that are high in iron content.
Remember to keep a close eye on your intake, as you want just the perfect amount in your system. One of the highest iron containing foods is liver, including from chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, and pork. Another great iron-rich foods are mollusks: shrimp, mussels, clams, and oysters. One great and fun food that is high in iron are squash and pumpkin seeds. These can be flavored in a number ways, adding some variety to your diet. Nuts are another easy way to add iron to your diet, and come in so many varieties. Also good are white beans and lentils, again which can be cooked in a number of ways, and used in many recipes. Lastly, and especially perfect for pregnant women, are whole grains and green leafy veggies. This means that salads and breads are an excellent source of iron. If your iron levels might be down, try eating some of these foods, but be sure to watch your levels and keep them in a reasonable range.
