Left/Right Wing Back : A wing back plays in a similar area of the team to a full back, however a wing back is usually only used in a formation where the team is playing three centre halves, or is playing two centre halves and a deep lying anchoring midfielder with no other natural wide players in defence or midfield. In this situation the wing back plays as both a full back, defending when necessary, but is also liable to get forward as often as possible to assist in attacks. The role is very demanding on the player and not only requires excellent fitness, but also a fine mix of defensive and attacking skills, allied to fine pace. It is quite common for a full back to be able play as a wing back.
