The Tip
Equipment Needed
A reversible WYB soccer jersey for Kindergarten and above (Soccer Tots have T-shirts provided with their fee) - Boys wear red/white; girls wear blue and white. These may be purchased new at Egelhoff’s Sports, located in the plaza on North High Street (near Lazelle) for $17.99. However, you may want to check with neighbors as WYB has been using the same jersey for many years and the jerseys wear very well. Once Upon A Child also sometimes has our jerseys in stock. If you do purchase new, buy large. If the weather is cold, you can layer more easily underneath and regardless, the jersey can be worn as long as your child is playing WYB Soccer (excluding GOYSL and Middle School).
Shin Guards (provided for Soccer Tots) - These are required for all players for both practice and games. They are available at any sporting goods store or at stores such as Walmart, Target , or Kmart.
Socks- Socks must be worn to cover the shin guards. You may purchase soccer socks at any sporting goods store. Another alternative is to check out Once Upon a Child or Play It Again Sports. If they have them in stock, they usually sell for around $1.00 as compared to $6-$10 new.
Shorts- No special shorts are required, but sports shorts that are loose fitting are recommended.
Cleats- Cleats are not mandatory, but are recommended. We often are playing soccer in wet weather and cleats do offer traction on the field. In addition, they can simply be hosed off when they get muddy. Regular athletic shoes will be probably be ruined in rainy weather. If you purchase cleats, be sure and purchase shoes with rubber cleats (no metal) that do not have a toe cleat. Many parents purchase secondhand or borrow these as they are often only worn for one 6 week season. Once Upon A Child and Play It Again Sports are again good sources. Walmart, Kmart, Target, and sporting goods stores also carry them.
Soccer Ball (provided for Soccer Tots) - An inexpensive ball is recommended for practices. A size three ball is used through U-8. Please write both your name and phone number on the ball.
Water bottle- Please bring a water bottle to all games and practices. There are usually no drinking fountains at the fields.
